Building a FrankenMac is a pointless endeavor if you don't have anything to run on it. Fortunatly, all the systems covered by this project are supported by Apple's OS X. Playing with OS X is what started me down this path, as it likely has with many others.

For those looking to get a bit more primative, you can always try 'Classic' Mac OS, any version before X. There is a chance if you go with a newer G4 motherboard that it won't be able to boot into OS 9, but I have no real information on that. Builder beware, ask around before you commit.

If you want to really thumb your nose at Apple, you can run a non-Apple OS on your box. As far as Apple's concerned, it's not a Mac anyways, so you're not 'supposed' to run Mac OS's on it. Fine, NetBSD, OpenBSD, and Linux are all up and running on the PPC. You can also run Darwin if you want to have the underpinnings of OS X without violating an Apple EULA.
